Professor Sandeep Bhagwati came to Montréal in 2006 as a Canada Research Chair for Inter-X Art at Concordia University. Bhagwati studied composition at the Salzburg Mozarteum, Musikhochschule Munich, and the Cursus Annuel de Composition et Informatique Musicale at IRCAM. Bhagwati has served as composer-in-residence at Royaumont (1997), Darmstadt (2003), the Biennale Heidelberg (2006), and the California Institute of the Arts (2007). He has worked with musicians such as Sir Simon Rattle, Ueli Wiget, Dhruba Ghosh, Wu Wei, Swapan Chaudhuri, Mike Svoboda, Moritz Eggert, and many others. He has written several music theatre works and his compositions have been performed worldwide by leading musicians and orchestras, such as the Berlin and Munich Philharmonic, the Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ensemble Mosaik Berlin, and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. He has been awarded the Europäischer Kompositionspreis from the Akademie der Künste in Berlin in 1991 and the Ernst-von-Siemens-Förderpreis in 1992 and in 2003. He is also a writer, a theatre director and a conceptual performance artist. For various aesthetic reasons,
he has until this day never consented to release his music on CDs – it can only be experienced live in concert.
