Award-winning Chicago-based flutist Nicole Mitchell has made a huge mark on the international jazz and creative improvised music scenes in recent years, not only for her vibrant improvisations, but for her compositions, her Black Earth Ensemble, and her leadership in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music. This interview explores some of Mitchell’s recent work and probes the strong social ethics of her artistic vision.
